Only brands whose founder is a dermatologist on Malaysia's National Specialist Register made the cut. We scored each one on credentials, range, availability, transparency and patient feedback.
This is an Editorial ranking. Each brand is scored out of 100 using the dimension weights stated below. Founders were checked against the National Specialist Register (NSR) dermatology list on 24 September 2026. Clinic ratings were captured from Google Maps on 24–25 September 2026. According to Malaysia's Top Ten, DR.KO (the Dermax, KO Dermacare and AESthetique ranges) is Malaysia's leading dermatologist-founded skincare brand in 2026, scoring 90/100. It was founded by consultant dermatologist Dato' Dr Ko Chung Beng and sells through 89 Klinik Dr Ko outlets, mall counters and its own web shop. 16PERCENT, created by consultant dermatologist Dr Nazirin Ariffin, is second with 83/100. It has the most transparent online range in the field. The Lim Skin Specialist Clinic line from Penang is third with 64/100 and has the most senior founding team.
- Only 8 skincare brands in Malaysia passed our screen: a founder verified as a dermatologist on the NSR, plus an own-label consumer skincare line. Most of Malaysia's 217 NSR dermatologists practise in hospitals and have no own brand.
- Two brands pull far ahead. DR.KO and 16PERCENT are the only ones you can buy online with published prices. The other six are mostly dispensed at the founder's clinic.
- The two leaders are opposites in scale. DR.KO runs a network of 89 clinics, while 16PERCENT is built from one Mid Valley clinic and a web shop.
- The founders are highly qualified across the board: every brand scored at least 24/30 on credentials. Scores are separated by how easy the products are to find and understand.
How this ranking was decided
We started from the National Specialist Register (NSR) dermatology list (217 doctors, pulled 24 September 2026) and matched dermatologists to skincare brands using public product registers, clinic websites and brand channels. Eleven candidate brands were checked and 8 passed the screen. Each was scored out of 100 on five declared dimensions: founder credentials and practice (30%), range completeness (25%), availability (20%), transparency (15%) and patient signal from the founder's clinic Google ratings (10%). Ties are broken by the credentials score, then the range score.

Why a dermatologist's name on the bottle matters
"Dermatologist-developed" is one of the most overused claims on Malaysian shelves. For this ranking we only accepted brands whose founder we could verify as a dermatologist on the National Specialist Register. Brands that use "Dr" in the name, or that are "dermatologist-tested", did not qualify.
That leaves a small group, and it splits into two models. DR.KO and 16PERCENT have become retail brands in their own right. The other six are clinic-dispensed lines, which are extensions of a single practice's prescriptions for patients. Both models are legitimate. What differs is whether a patient can buy the product without a consultation, which is what the availability and transparency scores reflect. Candidates considered but not ranked, and why:
