This is a Data ranking. The order comes from our own calculation on KPDN's raw PriceCatcher records published on data.gov.my, using one fixed 20-item basket. Prices are shelf prices recorded by KPDN price officers in September 2026; member-card prices and short promotions are not captured, and prices at individual branches differ.

Quick answer

Lotus's is the cheapest supermarket chain in the Klang Valley for a basic grocery basket, according to Malaysia's Top Ten's analysis of KPDN PriceCatcher prices for September 2026. Our fixed basket of 20 everyday items (rice, cooking oil, eggs, chicken, fish, vegetables, Milo, sardines, detergent and more) cost RM201.15 at Lotus's, against RM202.84 at Mydin and RM206.75 at Econsave. The Klang Valley median for the same basket was RM222.17, and Village Grocer was the most expensive of 21 qualifying chains at RM262.04, 30.3% more than Lotus's.

  • Lotus's wins on packaged goods: it has the lowest or joint-lowest price on 8 of the 19 items whose price varies, including Milo 900g (RM18.49), King Cup sardines (RM8.35), chicken (RM8.82/kg) and Top detergent 3.6kg (RM17.89).
  • The top three are separated by just RM5.60. For fresh food alone (eight items), Econsave is cheapest (RM62.34), ahead of Mydin and Lotus's.
  • Premium grocers cost far more for the same items: Jaya Grocer RM239.90, Cold Storage RM242.06 and Village Grocer RM262.04, against a Klang Valley median of RM222.17.
  • The biggest single-item gaps are fresh: ikan selar ranges from RM15.90 a kilo (NSK) to RM32.50 (Village Grocer), and imported garlic from RM5.69 (Mydin) to RM14.00 (AEON). Price-controlled sugar is RM2.85 everywhere.

How this ranking was decided

This is a Data ranking. We downloaded KPDN's raw PriceCatcher file for September 2026 (1,742,320 price records) from data.gov.my on 15 October 2026, kept the 168 hypermarkets and supermarkets in the Klang Valley that reported prices, and grouped them into chains. Each chain's price for each of 20 fixed items is the median across its stores; the basket total ranks the chains, cheapest first. Chains needed at least two reporting stores and a price for all 20 items: 21 of 25 multi-store chains qualified. The basket, area and rules were fixed before any totals were calculated, and there is no editorial adjustment.

Grocery prices are a constant topic in Malaysian households, and they moved again this year: DOSM put August 2026 inflation at 1.9%, with food up 1.9% (The Star), and chicken up 8.0% and tomatoes 38.2% year on year (RinggitPlus). Advertised "lowest prices" are hard to compare, so we used the government's own price checks instead. KPDN officers record shelf prices at thousands of premises every month for its PriceCatcher app (The Vibes), and the raw records are published on data.gov.my. We took September 2026, the latest complete month, and priced the same 20 items at every supermarket chain in the Klang Valley.

The result is a close race at the top and a wide gap at the bottom. Lotus's, Mydin and Econsave all come in below RM207, while the premium grocers that dominate Klang Valley malls charge RM240 to RM262 for identical branded goods and the same grades of fresh produce. That spread is worth more than RM700 a year for a household that buys this basket monthly. The basket

Twenty items a family buys most weeks, chosen because at least 100 Klang Valley supermarkets report them, not because any chain sells them cheaply: Jasmine Super 5 rice (10kg), Buruh cooking oil (5kg), coarse white sugar (1kg), Cap Sauh flour (1kg), 30 grade A eggs, standard chicken (1kg), ikan selar (1kg), yellow onions, imported garlic, tomatoes, Beijing cabbage and potatoes (1kg each), F&N sweetened creamer (500g), Milo (900g), Maggi curry noodles (5-pack), King Cup sardines (425g), Kipas Udang sweet soy sauce (345ml), Kara coconut milk (200ml), Sunlight dishwashing liquid (800ml) and Top detergent (3.6kg).

Packaged goods vs fresh food

Lotus's wins the basket on packaged goods. Its 12 packaged items total RM137.55, the lowest of any chain, helped by Milo at RM18.49 and Top detergent at RM17.89, RM9.61 below the dearest chain. The chain has run a "#LebihMurah" price-cut campaign on thousands of items since 2023 (The Sun). On the eight fresh items, Econsave is cheapest at RM62.34, with Mydin (RM62.53) and Lotus's (RM63.60) close behind. Shoppers who buy mostly fresh produce will find the top three almost level; the gap opens up on branded goods.

Grocery prices are only half of a household budget; the other half is income. Seven of Malaysia's ten highest-earning districts are in the Klang Valley, according to our ranking of Malaysia's richest districts, yet even there a RM60 monthly difference on the same basket adds up. Families weighing where to settle can compare this with our best districts to raise a family.

Where does PriceCatcher data come from?

PriceCatcher is run by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN). Its price officers record shelf prices for hundreds of items at supermarkets, markets and shops across Malaysia, and the raw records are published monthly on data.gov.my. Malaysia's Top Ten used the September 2026 file, 1,742,320 records, and computed this ranking itself. Member-card discounts and short promotions are not captured.

How this ranking was produced

  • Question: Which supermarket chain in the Klang Valley charges the least for a basic grocery basket?
  • Data: KPDN PriceCatcher transactional prices (dataset pricecatcher, file pricecatcher_2026-09.csv, 1,742,320 records, 1–29 September 2026), with the premise and item lookup tables, downloaded from storage.data.gov.my on 15 October 2026. September 2026 was the latest complete month; no records for 30 September had been published.
  • Area: W.P. Kuala Lumpur and W.P. Putrajaya in full, plus the Selangor districts of Petaling, Petaling Jaya, Hulu Langat, Gombak, Rawang, Sepang, Cyberjaya and Klang (as coded in KPDN's premise file). Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor, Kuala Langat and Sabak Bernam are excluded.
  • Stores: premise types "Hypermarket" and "Pasar Raya / Supermarket" only; mini-markets, sundry shops, wet markets and wholesalers are excluded. 168 qualifying stores reported prices in September.
  • Chains: stores grouped by banner from the store name. Tesco stores count as Lotus's (renamed in 2021); AEON BIG is ranked separately from AEON; Giant Mini counts as Giant; My Hero counts as Hero; Mydin Mart counts as Mydin; NSK Grocer and NSK Trade City count as NSK. Single-store businesses are not ranked.
  • Basket: 20 fixed items (listed above), each reported by at least 100 Klang Valley supermarkets.
  • Calculation: (1) median of all September prices per store per item; (2) median of those store medians across each chain's stores; (3) basket total = sum of the 20 chain prices. Lowest total ranks first.
  • Eligibility: at least two reporting Klang Valley stores and a price for all 20 items. A fallback (18 of 20 items, gaps filled with the Klang Valley median) was written down in advance but was not needed: 21 chains met the full rule.
  • Tie rule: more reporting stores ranks higher (not needed).
  • Fixed in advance: area, store types, basket, calculation, eligibility and tie rule were recorded on 15 October 2026 before any totals were computed. No editorial adjustment of positions.

Notable exclusions

Candidates considered but not ranked, and why:

  • Wan Lee Heng (RM223.51, 11th) and Hero (RM225.98, 12th) — Qualified but just outside the top ten; Wan Lee Heng missed tenth place by 36 sen.
  • AEON (RM235.49, 15th) — Qualified with 10 reporting stores, but its mall supermarkets cost RM19.89 more than sister banner AEON BIG for the same basket.
  • Jaya Grocer (RM239.90), Cold Storage (RM242.06), The Store (RM248.97) and Village Grocer (RM262.04) — Ranked 18th to 21st. Village Grocer is the most expensive qualifying chain, 30.3% above Lotus's.
  • Ben's Independent Grocer and Mercato — Not ranked: no store reported a price for standard chicken (ayam bersih standard), so the 20-item basket could not be completed.
  • Tani Segar and Bhuiyen K — Not ranked: only 17 and 15 of the 20 basket items reported in September.
  • Single-store supermarkets — Businesses with only one reporting Klang Valley store (for example Isetan KLCC, Hock Choon, Seibu TRX and several independent pasar raya) are outside the chain ranking. The cheapest individual store in our data was Lotus's Cheras at RM199.10.

Limitations

PriceCatcher records shelf prices collected by KPDN officers; member-card prices, app vouchers and short promotions are not included, and the data has no records for 30 September. A chain's price is the median across its reporting stores, so individual branches can be cheaper or dearer. Chains with few reporting stores (TF Value-Mart has two, St Rosyam Mart three) are represented by fewer observations. Twenty items show the cost of a common basket, not a chain's whole range. Prices change monthly and this ranking reflects September 2026 only.
